Acrylic Paint As Nail Polish

The most common product to use to paint your nails is nail polish. But did you know you can also use other products to paint the nails. Ever heard of acrylic paint to polish the nails? No. Well, I’m going to explain how and why to use acrylic paints on your nails.

"Acrylic paint is fast drying paint containing pigment suspension in acrylic polymer emulsion."

Why would a person use acrylic paint instead of just regular nail polish? I can think of many benefits. Acrylic paint is readily available and cheap. You can buy it at every craftstore. I got my acrylic kids paint kit and painter brushes for €3,-/$3,90 USD. Acrylic paint is very pigmented, comes in different colors so ideal to use for nail art. You can buy yours in just the primairy colors, neon and even glow in the dark. Other benefits are; The paint dries fast and is non-toxic so great to use as nail polish for kids.

To apply acrylic paint on your nails you need to use a basecoat. Acrylic paint is high pigmented and will stain your nails, just as regular nail polish would stain your nails. When a basecoat is applied and dry, you can apply acrylic paint with just regular small paint brushes. You can buy these brushes in any craftstore, just as the paint itself. When you painted on the acrylic paint, you will see the paint get dry, the paint gets a semi matte finish. After painting the nails with acrylic paint, you need to use a topcoat. Acrylic paint will chip fast. To remove the acrylic paint you can just use a regular nail polish remover, acetone or acetonefree.

I also awnsered three most asked questions about acrylic paint as nail polish:

Can you use acrylic paint on top of regular nail polish?
Yes. If you like to add a small design with acrylic paint on painted nails that already have regular nail polish, you can. Don't forget to seal it with a topcoat.

Is acrylic paint useable for stamping nail art?
Yes and no. You can definitly try using acrylic paint for stamping nail art. It does work, if you let the polish dry in between the stamping. After you stamped the image on the nail and before you stamp it onto the nail, you have to let the paint dry a little before you can stamp it onto your nails without smearing it around. However, the endresult is never as pretty when you use special stamping polish.

How about other nail art and acrylic paint?
You could use acrylic paint for many nail art purposes. You can use the paint for drag marbles designs, just make sure to work as quickly as possible because the paint dries very fast.

Have you ever tried acrylic paint as a polish for your nails? If yes, how do you like it? If no, would you ever consider to try acrylic paint as nail polish? If there are any question, please, feel free to ask them.

WARNING! I'm so pissed. There is another "blogger" who copied this whole article and put it on her own blog. My Acrylic Paint As Nail Polish article that I wrote myself, which pictures I took myself. I'm not going to link her blog and article over here, just because I don't want to give her any credit or views. I never heard of her, I don't know who she is. She never contacted me saying she wanted to borrow something I wrote. I think it's pathetic. I don't understand why people would do this. Frankly it's just stealing!

  3. Ik gebruik het altijd voor nail arts, op één of andere manier ben ik bang dat acrylverf in je nagels trekt haha. Op zich wel mooi dat matte. Liefs Sandra www.chocolateandlipstick.com

  4. Can I use it on gel nails as well? I mean a coat of gel then acrylic paint then another coat of gel? What do you think?

    1. I'm not a professional, but if you have a diy gel kit you can always just try it yourself. I know you can use regular nail polish between two coats of clear gel. So, I think you can use acrylic paint as well.

    2. I know this is an old post but this might be useful anyway...I've had this done at the salon because I love shellac but the nail tech hadn't done art with shellac before so she did a base coat then acrylic nail art with another shellac top coat to seal it in. It lasted a week with absolutely no chipping and then a few more days before I had to have it removed :)

  6. I've noticed it messes up much easier than regular polish. Smears as if it's freshly put on HOURS later.

    1. You probably haven't let it dry long enough betweenbetween coats. Regular nail polish does too. My solution is always do several thin coats instead of one or two thick

    1. I've tried and used paint brushes with regular nail polish. Works great if you want to do nail art and have to paint very precise. Just make sure you clean your brushes right after you used them.

    1. I wouldn't even try using it on my lips. Acrylic paint is not makeup and not safe for your face.

    2. And it's not the acrylic resin that bad either. Some of the pigments are not to be used near eyes and mouth due to allergy or irritant properties. Hansa yellows and some ago reds coming to mind.

  10. does it work better than nails polish??

    1. I does when you want to do nail art, because there are such prominors that with nail polish if you make a mistake you will have to take all the polish off. If you use acrylic you can take it off with water.Varnish on varnish gets sticky.
However, if you just want to paint with one colour without porminors use nail polish.

    1. i wouldnt recomend u using it as nail polish often at all just to be safe. its not chemical free like most newer salon brands such as opi, china glaze and the new and vegan zoya! there are so many products out there that we all have to be careful so that way we can eat whatever we want!

  12. Hey I have a question, I bought this migi nail art kit, apparently they do not use nail polish, its acrylic paint. I did not use a base coat. I used a top coat so it stayed for over a month. I just took it off, my nails are all stained. Is there a way to get rid of that? Nail polish remover will not work. WHAT IS THE WORST PART is the in the center of my nail there are all types of holes,,,my nails are peeling from the middle. It is scary, do you think they can get infected?

If you use acrylic nail polish without a basecoat would it eat away your nail?

    1. oh no! u poor thing. moisturize your nails with cuticle oils and anything similar at least a few times a daythe more the better to coax them to grow out. eat walnuts, dark greens and fish to help heal from the inside out and do your best to keep them healthy til they grow back. this could take months. but be patient and it will pay off and yes be careful if your nail is weak and severely exposed it could get infected so invest in disposable gloves any type to protect them while u wash dishes and clean house. good luck.

    2. try zoyas qtica natural nail strengthener. its got all natural kinds of good stuff in it to make your nails strong the natural way. its around $20 but a good investment if you are worried

    3. Not sure if you will read this again or not, but do you think I can paint over these holes? I don't know if that is a good idea or not... I really never go without painted nails. Do you think that it would infect the nail, or protect it? Ahh!

    4. definely infect, be safe first, always!

  13. Thanks so much guys, I really appreciate it.
I never imagined polish could do this. Then again it was acrylic paint those jerks. Maybe I just left it on too long, I dont know. I hope people learn from this to always use a GOOD quality basecoat!!! Don't be me!

  14. Its grown out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Did not take as long as I thought, but it grew out, it actually ended up splitting the whole nail and below but eh it is gone now

  15. Can I use it for nail printing (means printing newspaper strips?)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If you mean the newpapers nails which I did a tutorial on? No, because acrylic paints cement is water. Simply said, it's waterbased, so the paint would come of if you use any watery liquid.. and since you need to use (rubbing) alcohol to transfer the printing of the paper, the paint will stain or come off when using alcohol.

  18. I Just happen to be looking into those paints for the nails and now I have decided to stick with the water based acrylic paints from the craft stores for now. Thanks for those posts to let us women know about what happened.

  19. This is awesome. I'm getting my nails ready for Halloween this year. Out of all of the nail polish I own, I could not find red! So I decided to use acrylic paint. I mixed crimson with orange in a half empty nail polish bottle and shook it up and it came out perfect!

  20. this is perfect.... i wanted a particular colour but didn't have it as a nailpolish colour so i made it with acrilic paint :D

  22. I want to do this, as I paint so much, and have TONS of acrylic paint at home, and barely any nail polish. I was just wondering what a good base coat would be. Thanks in advance!

  23. I went to go get my nails done from a friend and we mixed a bunch of different colours for the base coat and then painted designs using acrylic paint and sealed with a topcoat! its lasted SO much longer than regular nail polish. I looked up your (original :)) blog to give me a piece of mind haha.

  26. Hi! I thoroughly enjoy your blog and have a question... I use gel polish and started to use acrylic paint for nail art. I used the gel top coat and noticed the design was easily "picked off". Is there any way to remedy this?

  27. Can you suggest me some real good top coats which are easily available as well as a little cheaper?_😅😅

  28. I appreciate this information about using acrylic paint for nail polish. It is good to know that there are several methods of painting nails. I did not know that acrylic paint is fast drying and that it contains pigment suspension. Something to consider would be to find all materials needed to do these acrylic nails for a price within your budget. http://www.enchantedpolish.com/products

  29. It's also a lot easier to use sometimes. As a goth guy, I find black nail polish really hard to get right (can never get it opaque or smooth) but I do have experience with model making and paints. I use a really small brush to do the edges with acrylic black paint then I fill in the rest of the nail with a larger brush. A glossy top coat seals it in and finishes my nails.
